About the project: I’m Jessica Walsh, and I live in Reading, PA. I teach a yoga and hooping program to children called YogiDance. World Hoop Day gave a donation for hoops, so that I could distribute them to children in low income areas of our poverty-stricken city. On November 2nd I volunteered and held a class at the Olivet Boys and Girls club of Reading. The class had 14 children ranging from ages six to nine. I started the class with fun yoga games and poses. The highlight of the class was definitely exercising with the hoops. Their faces lit up when I brought out the bright patterned hula hoops. A lot of the kids already knew how to keep the hoop going. For those who didn’t, I gave a demonstration and after only a few tries, they were improving. A great feeling came over me as I watched the children having a blast with their hoops swinging around their waist. After the class was over the kids were filled with joy when I told them that the hoops were theirs to keep. They couldn’t believe me. One girl said, “You mean I can take it home?” With few things to call their own, they paraded out of the gym, hoops held high. Hooping is an outlet for children to express themselves and exercise. I am thankful that through World Hoop Day I was able to give those children an opportunity.
